How is THC-O made, and what do you need to know about it?

THC-O features among the hemp-derived cannabinoids with a molecular structure similar to Delta-9 THC, such as Delta-8 THC or Delta-10 THC.

THC-O acetate - also known as tetrahydrocannabinol or THC-O - doesn’t occur in nature. That’s why what you’ll see in your THC products will be a synthetic, non-natural cannabinoid. Chemically speaking - contrary to cannabinoids occurring naturally in hemp plants, THC-O is a synthetic substance, an ester of THC, synthesized using acetic anhydride. Where does it start?

How does the process of synthetizing THC-O work?

How is THC O acetate made? Firstly, manufacturers have to convert extracted from the hemp plant CBD into Delta-8 THC to synthesise THC-O. Then, in the next step, they add acetic anhydride to the Delta 8 THC molecules in order to finally produce THC-O acetate.

Why do manufacturers synthetize THC-O?

It’s not the same as with Delta 8 THC - because Delta 8 does occur in nature in minimal amounts, an issue is producing enough volume. Therefore, using CBD and converting it into Delta 8 is more simple and, in the end, affordable for customers. Imagine how expensive would fully-natural Delta 8 would be!

With THC-O, the story is entirely different. It simply has to be synthetized, because it can’t be derived from hemp in any form.

Why is THC-O so special?

You already know how is THC-O made. But why is everyone talking about it?

As we mentioned before, THC-O is reported to be not only three times as potent as regular THC but also visibly more psychedelic. Therefore, it can help you achieve a high on a more spiritual level than other forms of THC.
